Lifetime’s Celebration Of Women (’s Deaths)

Lifetime Network’s “about” page on their website claims that their goal is to “celebrate women.” That seems odd when considering the Lifetime movies my mom watched when I was little. I don’t remember the names of the movies, mostly because I didn’t want to watch them, but I remember that they didn’t seem to be “celebrating women.”
Movie #1- This one was about an abusive relationship. Through the whole movie, the woman’s ex-husband beats her and threatens to kill her. At the end of the movie, the woman is sleeping in bed when the man comes in. He has a hammer and proceeds to repeatedly beat her skull in with it, savagely killing her. I think the final scene was of the woman’s daughter crying while holding the bloody hammer.
Movie #2-I don’t remember much about this one except that it had another classic “woman getting senselessly murdered” scene. I remember that this movie was playing at 4:00 when I got home from school, which seems odd. There’s a group of high school kids at a creek and they all gang up on this one girl. They bash her in the head with a rock, then they push her head in the water and put a large log over her neck so she can’t escape drowning. She dies.
Movie #3- This movie was about a high school girl who was an alcoholic. She would fill her water bottles with vodka and drink all day in school. I think in the end she killed her best friend while driving drunk, or she gets killed driving drunk. Anyway, some lady dies violently.
So in these three “celebrating women” movies one woman is killed with a hammer by her ex-husband, one woman is drowned by a group of classmates, and one woman is killed by driving drunk. It seems like they’re celebrating brutal deaths of women more than just celebrating women.
Those movies are probably more than ten years old, so you would think that maybe Lifetime has changed over the course of time. Nope. Now Lifetime features America’s Most Wanted and Unsolved Mysteries, which are basically shows about women getting raped and murdered. Also, coming in January is the new Drew Peterson: Untouchable movie starring Rob Lowe. This is the inspiring tale of a police sergeant who was married four times and “allegedly” murdered his third and fourth wives. Lifetime’s advertisements for the movie are just Rob Lowe’s Drew Peterson saying “I’m untouchable, bitch.”
So come on, Lifetime, there’s bound to be some inspirational stories about women that don’t involve them having their skulls bashed in. Can’t you think up something?
“No, don’t try to change us, we’re untouchable bitch.” responded Lifetime.
